To be released on All Aboard Records on 26th October, We've Tried Nothing and We're All Out of Ideas is the
stupendously good new CD from Pharaohs. [The CD Single Squashed Against My Wall was released on 7th September,
with the additional tracks Richard Grip and an acoustic version of Squashed.]
Quality, they say, speaks for itself, and rarely more so than in the case of this superb 7-track collection. The vocals,
guitars, drums and occasional cello play off each other perfectly to create and sustain a tentative and in places
world-questioning atmosphere from start to finish; altogether one of the best CDs of the year, both in terms of content
and production. The guitars, in particular, are a joy - they have a complexity and dexterity that entertains, challenges
and impresses in equal measure.
But how to describe the music?! In places the counterpoint shouts early prog, then we jump forwards a couple
of decades to unadulterated indie, then back into Gentle Giant complexity, then crashing back via skater to present
day rock. And that's just the opening minute of Space is a Waste of Space!
The entire CD presents is a comprehensive fusion of accessible rock styles, done in such a subtle and convincing way
that the joins are just about undetectable. A truly spectacular performance, and one that warrants further inspection.
I heartily recommend Pharaohs to one and all. Congratulations!
