Derby boys Eskimo Fires introduce themselves as 'your latest new faves' and 'tune smiths of a higher order'. They then continue to talk about the success of Andy Black's old band Leon? At this point I double-check it is actually Eskimo Fires' latest EP we’re listening to – yep, it is!
With a softer approach to rock Eskimo Fires treat the listener to three powerful songs packed with emotion and conviction. Bearing similarities to bands such as The Charlatans, Snow Patrol and Coldplay these guys seem to take little snippets of inspiration from various parts of the musical spectrum. The result: A style that sounds original without deviating from the mainstream template drastically.
From the moment the melancholy piano of Be There is introduced the vibe of this demo is instantly set. With every instrument cleverly complementing each other, this track (like the whole demo) is easy on the ear and great to chill out too.
Up next is my standout track on the demo Let It Go. With a warm fuzzy bass line, fantastic vocal melodies and a song structure to make some bands weep with envy, these guys demonstrate fantastic musical fusion. With nobody stealing all the thunder Eskimo Fires create team music where the overall sound is the main focus.
I have to admit when I read the bold statements plastered all over the press pack I didn’t want to like Eskimo Fires. Alas, I couldn't help it. This is clever, catchy music that exceeds expectations.
